What's with the tractor trophy?

The Story

Life is all about bringing our unique experiences to the table. For me, that was winning the Queen of the Furrows at 18. Back in Prince Edward Island, it wasn't a big deal. But then I went to a liberal arts college. The more people I met, the more people had LOTS of questions. How do you win a farming pageant? (by riding a tractor) Do you really have the title of Ms Plowing? (yes) What the hell is a furrow? (It's a line of dirt.)
Sharing this story taught me how to tell stories, and how to teach stories. What information feels like a given to us, but is brand new information to others? What's normal to you but hilarious to everyone else? Living in Scotland for the past eight years, I keep my tractor trophy on my bookshelf as a little slice of home and a reminder of where I come from!

In August, I spoke to CBC's Island Morning to look back at my pageant win and the debate it sparked all those years ago! You can listen to it here
